The story behind

Every villa has an origin, and most of them are quieter than the brochure suggests. Ikan Villa began with a small plot of land in Singakerta, on the southwestern edge of Ubud, and a simple question: what would it take to build a place where two people could genuinely slow down?

BEGINNING WITH A QUIET PLOT

Singakerta is not the busy part of Ubud. It is banjar lanes, family compounds, and rice fields that still flood and drain on the old schedule. Choosing to build here meant accepting a few minutes' drive to the center in exchange for something harder to find. Silence at night, and the sound of water moving through the fields at dawn.

BUILT FOR TWO, DELIBERATELY

The villa could have held more rooms. We decided early that it would not. One bedroom, one living space, one kitchen, all arranged for a single couple rather than a crowd. It is a harder business decision and a better guest experience, and we have never regretted it.

THE DETAILS THAT TOOK THE LONGEST

The six-metre pool was positioned and repositioned until it caught the sunset properly. The kitchen was given its own separate space so that cooking would not spill into resting. The bathroom got a deep hot tub as well as a shower, because the two serve different moods. None of these were obvious at the drawing stage. All of them came from imagining the day rather than the floor plan.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND IT

A villa is only as good as the people who run it. Ours is staffed around the clock by a team fluent in English, Bahasa, and Mandarin, who will arrange a driver, cook breakfast the way you prefer it, and otherwise leave you alone. Knowing when not to appear is a skill, and it is one we hire for.

WHAT HAS NOT CHANGED

The gardens have filled in. The furniture has been replaced once or twice. What has stayed constant is the intention behind the place, which is simply that nothing here should feel accidental. Every detail is a decision someone made on purpose, and we would rather you feel that than notice it.
